White LCD display installation for 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT
On February 2013, Takram exhibited “Oto Megane” as part of the “Design Ah” exhibition held at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in Roppongi, Tokyo. This work presents a surprising experience to the audience by superimposing “vision” on top of sounds that we normally only “hear” through our ears.
From a distance, this project appears as a white illuminating screen displayed on a wall. Approaching the monitor, one begins to hear noise. By looking into the white screen using “Oto Megane (sound lens),” one discovers the source of the sound in various forms, such as “sound wave,” “movements that make the sound,” and “scenes of actually making the sound.”
In LCD monitors, two polarizing films are layered on top of each other. These two layers of film are required for one to see the images being displayed on the screen. Based on this principle, one layer of film was removed from an LCD display, and another polarizing film of the same quality was applied to the surface of the “Oto Megane.” Thus, one is only able to see video on a white screen through “Oto Megane,” when the two polarizing films are layered on top of another.

An exhibition held in March 2013 at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in Roppongi, Tokyo. This exhibition is an extension of NHK E-Television’s educational program called “Design Ah!” The theme of the exhibition was the “design mind,” and focused on insight and creativity that are essential to everyday life and actions, and the ability to unconsciously make the right decisions. The goal is to nurture a design mind in children, who are the people that will shape the future, and to sustain great sensibility and a design mind among adults as well. Making use of sound and video, the exhibition featured various endeavors to help foster a design mind through an exhibition that can be physically experienced.
